SIXTEEN SHIPS THAT SERVED AS RADAR PICKET SHIPS DURING THE COLD WAR
There were 8 ships on each coast and served as the seaward extension of the Distant Early Warning System
(DEW line) of North America. They were converted WWII Liberty cargo ships equipped with the latest electronic and radar equipment. The ships were controlled by and reported to the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD).
