USS O'Brien saw battles in both the Atlantic and Pacific during WWII. On 25 Jun 1944, she was hit by gunfire from a shore battery off Cherbourg, France, killing 13 and wounding 19. Twice hit by Japanese Kamikazes: On 6 Jun 1945 off Leyte; on 27 Mar 1945 off Kerama Rhetto, killing 28, missing 22, and over 100 wounded. Off Vietnam, 23 Dec 1966 she was struck by coastal batteries, killing 2 and wounding 4.
