In Memory of All Hamner Shipmates Who Served with Pride, Honor, and Dedication on This Great Destroyer in the Defense of Our Nation and the World
On 6 April 1945 at the battle for Okinawa the USS Howorth shot down five attacking Kamikaze planes with Lt. Hamner at his GQ station as the Gun Fire Control Director. On the last attack of the day a "ZEKE" broke through the ship's anti-aircraft fire and plowed into the director killing Lt. Hamner and eight others. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and this magnificent destroyer received his name.
