Ki Hong Kim ws a civilian interpreter with Dog Company, 2nd Batallion, 7th Marine Regimanet, U.S. Marine Corps. While serving he received 2 Purple Hearts for combat wounds; the first during the battle for the Punchbowl and the second for the fight of Kuan-Mo-Bong. After the cease fire, he joined and served in the Korean Marine Corps.
