During Operation Meade River, although wounded several times, Staff Sergeant Taylor, India Company, 3rd BN, 26th Marines charged a machine gun bunker and silenced the enemy moments before being mortally wounded.
While serving In Quang Nam with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, and engaged as part of operation Mead River, Staff Sergeant Taylor, was acting as the Company Gunnery Sergeant with another Marine and came under heavy fire. Taylor repeatedly maneuvered across an open area to rescue marines too seriously wounded to move. When he learned that there were still other seriously wounded men lying in another open area, pinned down by an enemy machinegun position, Taylor with 4 marines, moved forward across the fire swept terrain to rescue the Marines. Halted by devastating fire, he directed his companions to return to the company CP; took his grenade launcher and in full view of the enemy, charged across the open rice paddy toward the machinegun position firing his weapon as he ran. Although wounded several times, he succeeded in reaching and silencing the machinegun moments before he was mortally wounded.
