Tom was a combatant in Vietnam from January, 1970 through December, 1970. He began his tour as a PFC in the Military Police stationed at Long Binh. He was soon recruited into Special Forces where he served in the 5th Special Forces Group which was part of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG). Camp Long Thanh in 1970 was the base of operations for this elite, clandestine unit, which conducted special operations, reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare missions during the Vietnam War.
· UNIT: Tom was part of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), a highly decorated unit that saw extensive action in Vietnam.
· ROLE: The 5th SFG provided personnel to MACV-SOG, a top-secret group responsible for some of the most dangerous and covert missions of the war.
· LOCATION: This unit was based at Camp Long Thanh during 1970.
· MISSION: MACV-SOG missions included covert reconnaissance, unconventional warfare, and other special operations, often placing operators in situations where they were vastly outnumbered by the enemy.
