Michael was drafted into the Army in June,1968, went to Fort Campbell, KY, for basic training, and then to Fort Eustis, VA, for training at its Transportation School. He was then deployed to Vietnam as a Movement Specialist and assigned to the 3rd Transportation Center.
In Vietnam, Michael was based in Saigon and stationed mainly at Newport, a deep-draft port constructed on the Saigon River. His initial duties involved logistical services for port operations in connection with unloading and distribution of cargo delivered by ships berthing at the port. These activities mostly involved coordinating and monitoring trucking resources. Later, Michael traveled often to the unit’s Headquarters in Long Binh as the unit’s courier and on occasion to a satellite office at Tan An in the Mekong Delta.
Towards the end of his normal one-year tour of duty in Vietnam, Michael opted to extend for an additional two months to participate in an early-out program whereby returnees from Vietnam with less than five months remaining on their active-duty tour were immediately released from active duty. As a result, Michael served in Vietnam for 14 months and in the Army for a total of 19 months.
Specialist 5 Michael Lynch served with the 3rd Transportation Center in Vietnam. He was responsible for administration and logistical operations, ensuring that materials were moved efficiently to support Army combat missions.
