Army Medic, Surgical Technician 3rd Grade Barnhart provided medical aid to soldiers of the 96th Infantry Division during the "I Have Returned" Liberation of the Phillippine Islands and the fierce fighting in the last Island Campaign of the Pacific War, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. It was there that he was wounded, earning him the Purple Heart. Serving is hospitals in the Philippines, he assistend Physicians in all aspects of operating room proceedures and in administration of the pharmacy.
