I was born and raised in New Jersey. In March of 1970, while the war in Vietnam was still being fought, I enlisted in the U.S. Army. Based upon my scores in the tests required of all those being inducted into the armed forces, I was given an opportunity to enlist in the U.S. Army Security Agency. Following my basic training in Fort Dix, NJ, I was assigned to Morse Intercept School at Fort Devens, MA. After successfully competing my training to become a Morse Intercept Operator, I was transferred to the U.S. Army Security Field Station at Vint Hill Farm Station (VHFS) in Warrenton, VA. I spent the next several months engaged in their mission. In July of 1971 received orders to go to Vietnam, where I would be assigned to a Radio Research (RR) unit. While at VHFS I worked with several operators who previously served in Vietnam in Radio Research aviation units as Airborne Radio Direction Finding operators. That struck me as a very worthwhile mission, and I had an opportunity to volunteer for a RR aviation unit. I spent my year in Vietnam working on different platforms, the RU-8 and RU-21 airplanes, and the UH-1 helicopter. I like to think our mission made a positive impact for the U.S. military fighting the war. Following my service in Vietnam, I was reassigned to VHFS, continuing the work in their mission until my discharge and return to civilian life in March 1973.
