Sergat Darling served as a Marine Infantryman with K Company, 3rd Battalion,1st Marine regiment. During the invasion of the island of Peleliu and under the command of General "Chesty" Puller, they were ordered to secure the left flank of White Beach. During heavy fighting with enemy forces, PFC Darling was wounded in action. Now a Sergeant, Bill Darling went on the paraticipate in the invasion of Okinawa where he was again wounded in action, earning two Purple Heart medals.
