John was a machine gunner during WWII in the Pacific Theater, seeing combat in Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. He later served with the peace force in China. While leading his Marines in securing strategic locations in Korea, he received two Purple Hearts. John also commanded troops in Vietnam during fierce and heavy jungle fighting.
