James was initially trained to be a B-17 and B-29 right gunner at Chanute Field, IL and Smoky Hill Airfield in
Salina, KS. However, he became an Aircraft Engine Mechanic due to his specialized training on the B-29's R-3350
engine at Amarillo Army Airfield, TX. He was stationed at North Field Guam where he serviced the 39th bomb
group's aircraft for over 48 bombing missions over Japan. Planes from his squadron participated in the "Show of
Force over Tokyo Bay and the Battleship USS Missouri.
