Sergeant First Class (E7) Newsom was an Aerial Gunner and Radio Operations Mechanic during the Rhineland Air Combat, Germany; Balkan Campaign; Rome-Arno Campaign around the Gustav Line and the Arno River, and in South France. He was a member of the crew of a Consolidated B-24J when they were required to pail out prior to crashing in a vinyard in Smokvica on the island of Korcula. After WWII, he continues his service in the U.S. Army Reserves.
