Bernard's front line service was with the 7th Infantry Regiment, Company L. Fighting in North Africa, initial landing in Safi, onto Sicily and then into the battle of Anzio. He received his Silver Star from Lt. General Iron Mike O'Daniel after the Anzio invasion.
