US Navy Career Outline
· Our dad, Narciso DeGuzman Cruz, enlisted in US Navy in March 1946. As a recruit in Subic Bay, Luzon, Philippines, he was assigned to a ship during the Korean War. During his career in the US Navy, he served as a cook, chef and steward.
· He reenlisted on February 1950. His next assignment was in Coronado, CA where the family lived in Naval Housing.
· From December 1955 – February 1960, dad was assigned to USS Dixie (AD14) which was a Dixie-class destroyer tender.
In February 1955, dad and mom purchased their first home in San Diego. It was located at 5035 Pelusa Street. It was later sold in September 1966.
· From March 1960 – February 1961, he did majority of his assignment at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whiting Field located in Milton, Florida.
· From February 1961 – October 1961, dad was transferred to the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) Helicopter/Fighter/Undergraduate (HFU) Naval Air Station (NAS) in Pensacola, FL.
· From November 1961– June 1963, we lived in Alameda, CA where he worked at Naval Station Treasure Island.
· From July 1963 – May 1964, dad was assigned to the USS Saint Paul (CA-73) which was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser.
· From May 1964 – December 1964, he was assigned to multiple ships: USS Canberra (CAG-2), USS Chicago (CG-11) and USS Galveston (CLG-3) for the Commander, Western Sea Frontier Pacific Fleet (COMWESTSEAFRON PACFLT).
· From May 1965 – October 1966, he had new orders to report to the USS Galveston (CLG-3) which was a guided missile cruiser.
· From November 1966 -November 1968, dad was assigned USNAV Cubi Pt. located in Subic Bay, Philippines where he worked at the Bachelor Officers Quarters.
· From January 1969-October 1969, we lived in Imperial Beach, CA while he was assigned to the USS Ticonderoga carrier (CVA-14).
· From October 1969- June 1971, he was assigned to the Naval Reserve Manpower Center in Bainbridge, MD. During this time the family lived in military housing in Norfork, VA.
· His last assignment was from July 1971-July 1973 was at the Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. During that time, he was the Head Steward for Admiral Goodfellow.
· In 1973, he retired in San Diego, CA where we resided at 1410 Ocala Court, Chula Vista, CA.
Biography
My Dad, Narciso DeGuzman Cruz was the second child of 13 children born to Marcelino Cruz and Carmen DeGuzman.
He was born on October 29.1921 at Talogtog, Pangasinan Luzon, Philippines.
He was mainly raised by his grandmother, and his younger years were fun and carefree.
He met Amanda Rosario Ramos and married her on September 24, 1952. When my dad was assigned to a Naval base in California, he was able send for my mom. She arrived in the United States via a long ocean voyage.
They started their family on November 2, 1954, with the birth of their 1st child. Their family was completed 10 years later with 6 children; 2 boys and 4 daughters: Rosemarie, Charles, Rosalind, Rowena, Clifford and Rhonda.
On November 20, 1988, my dad departed from this life after living 67 years.
He is survived by all 6 of his children; 3 son in-laws: Jeff, Joseph and Scott; 9 grandchildren: Matthew, Jenna, Krystle, Nolan, Nathan, Jacob, Hayley, Nicholas and Michael; and 2 great grandchildren: Addelyne Rose, Michael Jeremiah and one on the way.
