Herbert was a veteran of three branches of the US Armed Forces, serving with the US Marine Corps 11th Regiment, 1st Marine Division, in the US Army as a paratrouper and Special Forces team communictions sergeant. He retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief Radioman.
