Robert fought valiantly at the Battle of Samar/Leyte Gulf on October 25,1944 to protect Task Force (Taffy 3 ). The USS Hoel and two other destroyers expending the last of their armament while valiantly charging enemy battleships. Prior to his ship sinking Robert was credited
with saving many of his fellow shipmates.
