John was onboard the fleet oiler USS Mississinewa A0-59, in Ulithi, Caroline Islands when a Japanese Kaiten manned suicide torpedo struck it. John skirted pools of flame covered water for 35 minutes before being rescued by the pilot of a Navy seaplane who set his aircraft down on the water using his propeller to fan the flames away.
