John Abbe joined the Navy in 1945 at Laguna Beach, CA, and served as a Seaman First Class on the oil tender USS Tolovana (AO-64) based at Pearl Harbor during World War II. His service took him to Bikini Atoll and Yokohama after the conclusion of the war in the Pacific. He finished his service in California, continued his education on the GI bill as a graduate of Stanford University, and as a Master in Public Administration from Cal State University Sacramento. His service as a sailor, and his love of the sea, led him to become a lifelong conservationist.
