Jim Kerr enlisted in the Navy in February 1969. Four months later, stationed aboard the destoyer Frank E Evans in the South China Sea, Jim was asleep while his ship was engaged in manuvers with an Austrailan Carrier Melbourne. The Evans cut in front of the carrier and was struck about 90 feet from the bow. The bow portion drifted off to the port side of the Melbourne and sank in less than five minutes. Jim Kerr and 73 of his ship mates perished.
