Al enlisted in the Navy at the age of 16. He served as a Machine Gunner on a B-24 with Patrol Bombing Squadron (VPB-197) (VPB-200) (VPB-106) in the Pacific during WWII. Following the end of the war he participated in the closing of the US Navy bases in Australia and Soiuth Pacific.
