Rear Admiral Chambers was the first African American to command a US Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Midway (CV-41). A Naval Academy graduate and naval aviator, he served as Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 67 (VA-67). During Operation Frequent Wind in 1975, while the Commanding Officer of the Midway, he was instrumental in the evacuation of thousands from Saigon, earning widespread recognition for exemplary leadership and distinguished naval service.
