Nathan was in the Forestry Division in Company D, 43rd Engineers and later Company 49, 20th Engineers. They were engaged in lumber production in Murat, France during the war and in Pontex, France post war completing Allied road and dock repairs. They worked 10-hour days 7 days a week to deliver railroad ties and fuel. They endured mustard gas and torrential rain, "Soppin' up the ground till your knees are down in the mess."
