John Eberhardt

John Eberhardt was born June 17, 1946, in Jersey City, NJ and grew up in Iselin, NJ. He enlisted in the US Navy October,1967. His recruit training was at NTC Great Lakes, IL. Subsequently, "A" school began December of 1967 where John completed training as an Electrician's Mate. Sea duty began in May of 1968 on LANT NORVA USS Sierra (AD-18), a destroyer tender. While on the Sierra, John was released for temporary duty to attend NAVDESCOL, Newport, RI, for coursework related to his responsibilities. He returned to the Sierra which was was berthed in Norfolk, VA. It frequently left port to travel to destinations on the eastern seaboard, such as Boston, Philadelphia, St. Thomas and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  
In July of 1970 John was transferred to LANTFLT USS Canisteo (AO-99), an oiler. For John's final 10 months in the Navy, the Canisteo was in the Mediterranean, fueling the Navy fleet there. 
John's release from active duty was processed in August of 1971 at the Naval Station, Brooklyn, NY.  He completed his Naval Reserve obligation June, 1973. 
Upon his discharge, John attended the New York Institute of Technology and worked as a field engineer for Baxter Health.  
John was the ultimate community volunteer, instituting and leading many programs for the youth of Woodbridge Township.  He also was an officer in the local American Legion Post and was Commander in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in Sewaren NJ. He became Recreation Director for the Township of 100,000 residents and added many opportunities for the residents to enjoy such as a summer concert series. He began special teams for youth with disabilities, including Buddy Ball baseball and basketball, special hockey, sled hockey and instituted and hosted the Veteran's Project program on TV35. John's interviews with veterans from all branches of the service appear on YouTube and are archived in the Library of Congress. 
Upon his retirement in 2011 John continued to lead the Woodbridge Township Veterans Alliance which consisted of the 12 veterans organizations in the township and participate in his Coast Guard Auxiliary and American Legion activities. 
John is married to Carol, his high school sweetheart, and they've raised two wonderful children, Jim, an aeronautical engineer, and Alyson, a PhD coastal ecologist. Four grandchildren, Ainsley, Marleigh, Max and Amelie bring them unending joy. 
In 2022 John and Carol moved from their home in Iselin, NJ, to Exeter, NH. They've found small town New England life to suit them very well..
