Served during World War II (1943-1945). Assigned to Torpedo Squadron Eighty-four (VT-84 "Wolfgang") and flew in a Grumman TBM Avenger off of USS BUNKER HILL CV-17 as part of Task Force 58. Participated in 17 bombing missions against Japan and Okinawa, and torpedoed the Japanese battleship Yamato. Survived two Kamikaze attacks. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal w/2 stars, Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal w/2 stars, and the Navy Aircrew Wings.
