MEDALS-RIBBONS: Purple Heart, Vietnam Service, National Defense Service
Doc Tedford proudly served his Marines of Lima Company, 2nd Platoon, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines with honor and dedication until he himself was significantly wounded and medically retired.
My dad joined the Navy on April 20, 1964. He was sent to Vietnam in September 1966 and assigned to Second Platoon, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines. AKA "The Filthy Few". On December 31, 1966 my dad took someone else's patrol and the man walking in front of him stepped on a booby trapped mortar round killing him and seriously wounding my dad and five others. It took until the next morning to get them out to receive medical attention. My dad barely survived and still has shrapnel in his body today. He was medically retired on October 31, 1967. For his service in Vietnam he received the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Purple Heart. Although he enlisted in the Navy he very much feels like a Marine.
