Richard's talent as a mechanic ensured that all types of aircraft
were airworthy. His dedication made it possible for helicopters to
resupply ships in order to return to combat readiness.
Richard Hollis Wilson is an individual adored by his community, friends, and family alike. His willingness to provide a helping hand to those he loves and his impression upon those he meets is everlasting.
Rick grew up in Churchland, North Carolina with his two siblings and parents. Born into a family of carpenters Rick grasped the craft of fixing and woodwork at a very young age. Following high school, he enrolled in Wingate College (now Wingate University) and completed two full years of coursework before enlisting in the US Navy as a Seaman Apprentice (E-2). His incredible work ethic, book smarts, and ability to repair almost anything allowed him to excel as an Aviation Mechanic (AMH). While working on the CH46, SH3, and SH2 aircraft he developed a technical expertise that led to frequent promotion and respect among his peers. He was a proud member of the famed HC7 Sea Devils Squadron, which received the Presidential Unit Citation for Extraordinary Heroism in Vietnam. While stationed in Japan he recalled his love for the country: not because he and his friends had purchased Honda CB350’s and spent most of their time seeing how fast they could ride without getting arrested, but because Japan is where he met the love of his life. Rick met Cheryl Wilson (at the time Cheryl Williams) in 1970 at the World’s Fair. They were both foreigners in a beautiful country and the two quickly hit it off. Whenever they could find the time, they traveled across the country making plans for their life together. Shortly after Rick and Cheryl were married, he was sent to San Diego; Cheryl followed him to Chula Vista where the two shared a small apartment and a motorcycle. The two were inseparable, and along the way, they formed friendships and bonds that have lasted to this day. In the years following years, Rick left the Navy as a Petty Officer 2nd Class (E-5) with the following honors: The National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary (Korea) Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. After an accomplished time in service to his country, Rick went on to become a carpenter, where he focused his beautiful craftsmanship and relentless work ethic on a demanding career. Despite working overtime to support his two sons (Rick and Troy), his book smarts and love of learning would lead him to earn a Bachelor of Arts from San Diego State University. Rick’s technical expertise and innate ability to lead others transitioned him to become a lead foreman and eventually a project superintendent, however, Rick always preferred to stay as hands-on as possible. After returning from a full day of work, Cheryl and Rick would spend hours renovating the new home they had purchased in Imperial Beach, CA. Rick and Cheryl have raised two beautiful children and four incredible grandchildren in the home they built together.
Richard Wilson has left an enduring legacy of love, passion, and honor for his family and community.
