Nicholas served with pride and commitment during three combat deployments to Vietnam. Under threat of enemy shore batteries while on the gun line supporting Marines fighting at the Demilitarized Zone, Dupont took a direct hit causing many casualties among his fellow gunner's mates. Nicholas's dedication to his ship and leadership of his sailors never waivered.
