Medal of Honor: Petty Officer Monsoor, without regard for his own safety, threw himself onto a grenade, saving the lives of his two teammates. He gave his life for his country
The USS Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001) , commissioned on January 26,2019, was named in his honor.
On September 29th, 2006, Master at Arms, Monsoor was a member of a combined SEAL and Iraqi Army sniper element based in Ramadi, Iraq, providing warning and protection. When insurgents assaulted his element, a hand grenade bounced off Petty Officer Monsoor's chest and landed in front of him. Petty Officer Monsoor instantly threw himself onto the grenade to absorb the force of the explosion with his body, saving the lives of his two teammates. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic action. Just 5 months earlier he saved a wounded comrade while under heavy fire and received the Silver Star for his effort.
