Gilbert Lyle Carter was born in Snyder, NE on April 28, 1922 and graduated from North Loup High School in 1940. He enjoyed playing basketball and also played the trumpet and cornet for 12 years. Lyle enjoyed being a German Sheppard dog breeder in his young adult life. He married Mardell Elaine Carter in 1939 and had 3 children, Judith, Gerald and James. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from Omaha, NE, while working for the Union Pacific Railroad. After the Navy, Lyle went on to work for the railroad and Vulcraft, retiring in 1984. After a full life and surrounded by love from his family, Gilbert passed in October, 2006.
RM2 Carter proudly served and protected our great nation’s freedom in the U.S. Navy from June 29, 1944 to March 3, 1946. He then entered into inactive reserve duty and was fully discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserves on December 1st, 1952. His duty stations included Naval Training Center Farragut, Idaho, Naval Training School in both Great Lakes and Los Angeles and taught at Naval Training Center Gulfport, Mississippi. Having worked as a telegrapher for the Union Pacific Railroad, he proved to be an integral asset to the nation as he taught Morse code to troops during World War II. This communication was key for strategic coordination and intelligence our nation and allies relied on to win the war.
