Biography of Michael K. Sigsworth
GMG1, United States Navy
Michael K. Sigsworth honorably served his nation with courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication throughout his eleven years in the United States Navy. A native of Lisle, Illinois, Michael answered the call to serve and embarked on a distinguished naval career that would take him across the world and into the ranks of Naval Special Warfare.
After completing Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, he began his service aboard the USS SHASTA (AE 33) and later the legendary USS NEW JERSEY (BB 62), where he advanced as a talented and dependable Gunner’s Mate. His exceptional skill, leadership, and calm under pressure led him to earn the demanding and respected designation 9533 Naval Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewman.
As a member of Special Boat Unit 13, Michael served as GM2 and later GMG1, operating in some of the world’s most challenging maritime environments. His deployments included both Lebanon and the Persian Gulf, where he stood in harm’s way to safeguard his teammates, protect American interests, and uphold the highest traditions of Naval Special Warfare. He concluded his honorable service in August of 1990, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, discipline, and quiet professionalism.
Following his military career, Michael continued his commitment to service through work in law enforcement and later as an information technology technician. His dedication extended far beyond his professional life. As a longtime volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, he supported and guided youth—most proudly his son Sam, who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Within the Combatant Craft Crewman Association (CCCA), Michael devoted over a decade of relentless, compassionate, and selfless service as a volunteer, Treasurer, and Executive Board Director. His steady leadership and generous spirit strengthened the community of his fellow boat operators and ensured the preservation of their shared heritage. “Preserving the History and Honoring the Brotherhood”
Michael’s life is also defined by deep love for his family. He is the beloved husband of Barbara Sigsworth, proud father of Sam, cherished son of Joan Edwards, and devoted brother to Bill Sigsworth, sister-in-law Cathy, and uncle to Ian and Megan Sigsworth. Now residing in East Lake, California, Michael remains a man grounded in loyalty, humility, and quiet strength.
His plaque at Mt. Soledad stands as a permanent testament not only to his service in uniform, but to the character, sacrifice, and steadfast heart of a man who lived his life in service to others—his family, his community, and his country. “On-Time, On-Target, Never Quit!”
