Daniel, while attempting to pilot his plane out of harms way during the attack on Kaneohe Bay was killed in action. He was posthumously awarded a Special Letter of Commendation by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet.

USS Daniel T. Griffin was commissioned in his name.
