After enlisting and serving in the Air Force Nation Guard for four years, Ira J. Carpenter joined the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1987.
Stationed at: Key West, Florida, Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Bremerton, and Seatle Washington, Long Beach, and San Diego California. His expertise in Sonar Technology brought assignments as an instructor in San Diego, Thailand, and Iran. Although only ranked E9, he was appointed by Admiral J. L. Kowalsky as Officer in Charge of the west coast sonar analysis onshore facility for seven years. He honorably represented the west coast facility in Washington D.C. and the Pentagon. Master Chief Carpenter held this position until retirement in 1987 after 30 years of active federal service.
