MEDALS-RIBBONS: Presidential Unit Citation w/OLC, American Campaign, World War II Victory
As a 22-year-old 2nd lieutenant in the 579th Bomb Squadron, 392nd Bomb Group based at Wendling, England, Bill flew 15 combat missions as navigator of a B-24 heavy bomber over strategic targets in Germany and occupied France. He bombed Berlin three times and survived being shot down over Leige, Belgium. He retired after 24 years of active and reserve service.
