Richard enlisted in the Army Air Corps straight out of high school serving with the 5th Air Force in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign through the end of World War II. After being discharged form the Army Air Corps, he first atended college and then began a 22 year career in the U.S. Marine Corps with tours of duty that included the 2nd Battalion/6th Marines (Mediterranean), 1st Battalion/12th Marines (Okinawa), and 2nd Battalion/12th Marines (Vietnam) and HQ/Fleet Marine Force (Camp Smith).
