Then Colonel Pendelton led Marine Forces in Santo Domingo and Nicaragua before being promoted to Brigadier General and serving as the first Commanding Officer of Marine Base San Diego, renamed Marine Corps Recruit Depot in 1948. As the namesake of Camp Pendelton, Major General Pendelton enhanced North Island's facilities and fostered strong community ties. Following his retirement in 1924, he served as mayor of Coronado and was laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary in 1942.
