Lieutenant West served his nation in time of war as a Naval Aviator first flying anti-submarine patrols and convoy escort duty in the Atlantic before being transferred to the South Pacific to continue the fight against enemy forces, shooting down two Japanese aircraft. Lieutenant West went on to fly combat missions during the Korean War.
