Following graduation from the US Naval Academy, Class of 1968, Lieutenant Gilleskie requested assignment to Vietnam and there he supported the "Mobile Riverine Force" operations on the Mekong River. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V", citing his "exemplary courage under fire. leadership. initiative, and professional attitude in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service". He later served aboard the USS MACDONOUGH (DLG-8).
