LTJG McClendon served in USS LST-460 during the Pacific campaigns of WWII. The ship, a Landing Ship Tank, was never named. LST-460 participated in the amphibious assault of the Phillippines in the Battle of Leyte Gulf with a mission to retake the Phillippines from the Japanese. On December 21st, 1944, LST 460 was lost to enemy action following a direct hit by an enemy plane off the coast of the island of Mindoro. Despite orders to abandon ship, Lieutenant Junior Grade McClendon focused on wounded sailors, saving many lives while conducting an orderly abandonment of the vessel.
