LTJG McClendon served in USS LST-460  during the Pacific campaigns of WWII. The ship, a Landing Ship Tank, was never named.  LST-460 participated in the amphibious assault of the Phillippines in the Battle of Leyte Gulf with a mission to retake the Phillippines from the Japanese.  On December 21st, 1944, LST 460 was lost to enemy action following a direct hit by an enemy plane off the coast of the island of Mindoro.
