After enlisting in the Navy, Ivan became a Naval Aviator through the VE Naval Aviation Cadet Program. He flew the PB4Y-1 Liberator Bomber "Gallopin' Ghost" searching out submarines off the coasts of the United States and Europe. Involved with seven submarine kills.
