Caleb attended the University of California, Berkeley, through the Navy's V-12 Navy College Training Program. Then served with the "Seabees" as a Civil Engineer Labor Officer Construction, based in the Asiatic-Pacific area.

Born July 30, 1924.

Passed away peacefully May 9, 2015, at 90 years of age, surrounded by his family.

Lieutenant JG Caleb McCormick graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, through the Navy’s V-12 Navy College Training Program in the top three of his class and as a Company Commander. He graduated with honors including Phi Beta Kappa, Chi Epsilon, and Tau Beta Phi; later returning to the University for a Master’s Degree In Civil Engineering.

 

He served with the “Seabees” as a Civil Engineer Labor Officer Construction, based in the Asiatic Pacific area.

 

The Seabees stood by their belief, “CAN DO!” with their slogan, “We Build, We Fight.”

 

Lieutenant J.G. McCormick was recalled to active duty in the Korean War. He reluctantly resigned his commission in 1952 when he was working on highly classified secret Project Vista with a group of scientists and engineers. He received a letter of commendation from Secretary of the Navy Dan Kimball.

Caleb McCormick retired as an international business executive at age 62, after spending the first 20 years of his career as a tenured Cal Tech Professor of Engineering with special interests in Finite Mathematics. For the following 20 years he was a principal at MacNeal Schwendler Corporation (MSC) where he was instrumental in developing and marketing worldwide, NASTRAN, a Computer Program for NASA, used for Structural Engineering Analysis. He became Director of Far Eastern Operations and was Managing Director of the MSC International Group until he retired.

 

We honor our Man of Honor’s Service today in the Department of the Navy, United States of America, and for the husband and father that we love and remember.

 

Lieutenant J.G. McCormick was the son-in-law of Captain Malcolm Heslip, USNR, who introduced Caleb to his daughter, Susan. Caleb and Susan McCormick went on to be married for 66 ½ years, and had four daughters, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren by the time of his passing.
