John Alan McAnally – biography July 16th, 2022

Born in 1940 in New York City, Alan was the son of Arthur and Rosemary McAnally. Raised in Manhasset, NY, Alan was a 1958 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and attended Boston College for one year before receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from the Academy in 1963 and served as Surface Warfare Officer on the destroyers USS John W. Weeks, and the USS Forrest Sherman. He was also on the staff of the Commander of Destroyer Squadron 62 and was deployed to the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean. After leaving the Navy in 1967, Alan began a distinguished career in sales management and marketing consulting. In 1998 he founded Commonwealth Sales Consulting which he led until his retirement in 2015. He and Terry spent most of their life of 57 years together in Andover, Massachusetts, raising their three sons Glenn, Brian, and Christopher. In 2008, due to a family emergency, Alan and Terry moved to Southern California. They loved living here and decided to stay, ultimately finding their way to La Jolla in 2013. Alan never ceased to be moved by the beauty of the land and sea in this part of California and was always grateful for the opportunity to retire here. Alan was an avid traveler, and talented photographer. He and Terry were able visit all seven continents together. During his retirement he continued to be active as class representative for the Naval Academy and was part of the team that organized his 55th class reunion in San Diego around the Navy Notre Dame football game in 2015. He had a special passion for his work here at the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial. He cherished the opportunity to interview the veterans who are memorialized here and he loved being part of the process of designing the plaques which recount their individual stories. Today we are grateful that Alan’s service to his country and his commitment to the Mount Soledad Veterans’ Memorial are being recognized.
