Dr. Groff served as a Flight Surgeon at MCAS Miramar with the VMFA-314 "Black Nigts", logging over 200 flight hours in the F/A-18 Hornet. With his squadron, he deployed to the Persian Gulf onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN-68), where he cared for sick and injured Marines and Sailors during Operation Southern Watch.
