Leo earned his commission six months before the attack on Pearl Harbor and served with Admiral Nimitz and others on land until he went to sea. He then served as Chief Engineering Officer on Aircraft Carriers during battles in the Philippines, Guam, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
