December 7, 1941, Jerry Starr was 36 with a wife, 2 boys, and a successful career in Seattle. Soon after, he entered the Navy and served as a flight navigator until peace was achieved. He flew the Caribbean and Pacific routes pioneered by the intrepid crews of Pan American Airways only a few years before, first from Dinner Key, Florida (PBM), and then from Guam (R5D), using the celestial and radio navigation methods developed by Pan Am. After his hazardous and exhausting Pacific campaign he returned to his family. Wife Catherine also served as a payroll specialist at Alameda and a devoted single parent while he was gone.
