LCDR Murphy was assigned to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron SIX (HS-6) aboard the USS INTREPID (CVS-11). Flying as Plane Commander of a search and rescue helicopter in a valient attempt to rescue a downed Navy pilot, his helocopter was riddled by enemy fire which disabled one of his engines and wounded all on board. He ws able to successfully land his helicopter in the Gulf of Tomkin, saving all on board. For his actions, he was awarded the Navy Cross. He continued to serve in the Navy, retiring after 20 plus years of service.
