From Seaman Recruit to Commander, Submarine Development Group ONE, Bert served on the USS Florikan (ASR-9), USS Petrel (ASR-14), Elk River (IX-501), USS Proteus (AS-19), USS Sunfish (SS-281), USS K-2 (SS-2) and USS Tilefish (SS-307). He helped develop Guppy Submarines, deep and saturation diving, SEARCH, DSRV and SLBMs.
