Pete planted the left flank landing flag on Green Beach, Iwo Jima, for the assault on Mt. Suribachi where he detected and disarmed land mines. He participated in the Pusan Breakout in Korea where he led a mortar company.

Pete earned battlefield promotions in both Iwo Jima and Korea.
