As a US Army Captain during the Vietnam War, Gordon flew the OV-1A Mohawk in support of combat troups. He earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After his Vietman service he served an additional 17 years in the U.S. Army reserves and retired in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
