Lieutenant Colonel Fred Carolan served as a Combat Marine pilot qualified to fly in multiple aircraft, including the F-8U Crusader and the F-4 Phantom. He flew countless combat misions in Vietnam, earning the Silver Star. He also earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his special mission with VMCJ-2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Lt.Col Fred Carolan was buried with honors in Arlington National Cemetery in 2000
He earned his place there by being the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Silver Star and countless other medals. He retired out of Coronado after 24 years of service. He was the Marine Teacher at the Top Gun School. His career is featured in the book "Blue Moon Over Cuba". His grandson discovered the book and was amazed at what his “Bop” had done as part of VMCJ-2 squadron. He was a reconnaissance pilot during the Cuba Missile Crisis. He served 3 tours of service in Vietnam.
